Pet Identification

Despite all possible efforts, sometimes our pets escape or get lost. Fortunately, there are several pet identification options available to ensure your pet is returned to you should he get lost, escape, run away, or even get stolen.

One of the easiest and most effective things you can do to identify your pet is to get a name tag made. This simple action can make a significant difference should your pet be found wondering the streets by a neighbor or animal control officer. Your pet's name tag should include his or her name and your telephone number. Some people also put their address on the name tag.

Another option that is becoming more and more common is microchipping. Microchips are placed between the animal's shoulder blades, and cause the animal no pain or discomfort. The microchip has a code that is assigned to you and your pet, which is kept in the microchip company's database. Other information can also be included, such as veterinary information, any known medical issues, and additional emergency contact information. When a stray or lost animal is brought in, the people at the shelter or veterinarian's office will scan the animal for the chip.

Another option, one you may be less familiar with, is getting your pet tattooed. This may seem strange, but can actually be incredibly effective and helpful if your pet goes missing. Tattoos cannot be removed or washed off, and are an easy way to identify your pet.  For more information about tattooing your pet for identification purposes, talk to your vet.
