Summer Safety Tips for Dogs
Posted on Jun 14, 2016 7:30am PDT
Summer can be a lot of fun for dogs, especially when their owners are active people who take them on hikes, camping, fishing, and to places, such as rivers, lakes and beaches.
For many dogs, the summer is one of their favorite times of year, especially when they're a part of the "family vacations." But, we must remember that in the summer, there are certain hazards that place your pet's health at risk, and some of them can even be deadly.
When it's scorching outside, it's hard for dogs to keep cool, especially when the sun is beating down on dogs with thick, fur coats. While dogs sweat a little, it's not very effective. Rather, dogs cool themselves down by panting. So, when a dog has nothing but hot air to breathe, it's nearly impossible for the dog to keep themselves cool.
Protect Your Pet in the Summer Heat
To keep your dog cool and safe all summer long, follow these safety tips:
- Never leave your dog inside a hot car, as it can take minutes for your dog to die from heat stroke.
- If your dog accompanies you on errands, bring water for your pet and a dish, and bring your dog with you when you park your car.
- In the summer, surfaces, such as concrete and asphalt get sizzling hot. Try not to walk your dog on hot asphalt as it can burn their paws.
- We do not recommend driving around with your dog in the bed of a hot truck. The hot metal can burn their paws, and if you're in an accident, your dog can be injured or killed.
- When your dog is outside, make sure he or she always has access to fresh drinking water and shade.
- In the hot summer months, invest in a "kiddy pool" for your dog. A small plastic pool from your local grocery store or superstore will make your dog happy.
