Worms: Signs Your Dog is Infected

For many dog owners, this is not a topic that is exactly fun to talk about.  However, it is important that people who own dogs are aware of the signs of a worm infestation.  When a dog has worms, whether they are tape worms, heart worms or whipworms, it must be dealt with immediately.  Parasites can wreak havoc on a dog's internal organs and greatly damage their health if left untreated.

By detecting parasites early on, dog owners can not only prevent further infestation, but also have lighter treatment options.  For example, early detection may lead to a dog owner having to give his/her pet medicine whereas prolonged infestation can lead to drastic treatments, like surgery.

Below are common signs that may be indicative that your dog has worms.  If you notice any of these signs, it is in your best interest to find a local veterinarian and seek immediate treatment.  Call your veterinarian if you notice your dog:

-          is not eating his/her food

-          is vomiting

-          has a pot-bellied appearance

-          has persistent diarrhea

-          does not have his/her usual level of energy

-          appears fatigued

-          loses weight
