Questions to Ask Before Adopting a Pet

Adopt a pet, such as a dog or a cat, is a huge decision that should never be taken lightly.  When you adopt a pet, you are going to be responsible for it for many years to come.  This means you will not only have to take care of your pet on a daily basis, but also make sure it gets regular veterinary checkups.  Having a pet involves great physical, emotional and financial commitment.  Therefore, before you head to a local animal shelter or pet shop, ask yourself theses questions:

Do you really want a pet?
Sometimes, kids beg for pets because they think it will be fun.  However, they can lose interest quickly and leave you with all the work.  For this reason, you need to be sure that you are willing to take on the responsibility and that you really want to share your home with a dog, cat or even bird.

Do you have time for a pet?
Pets, especially dogs, need lots of exercise and attention.  Do you have the time it takes to walk a dog every day?  Do you have the time it takes to potty train a new kitten or puppy?  Understand that having a pet takes up time and if you are not willing to give up you time, having a pet can become stressful.

If you rent, does your landlord allow pets?
Sometimes, people rush into adopting without knowing if having pets violates the terms of their lease.  Then, they find out they either have to move or get rid of their pet. You can avoid this dilemma by understanding your landlord's terms first.

What is your lifestyle like?
If you are a couch potato, chances are that you do not want an active dog, like a Labrador.  Instead, you may want a dog that is less energetic, like a French bulldog.  If you lead a very active lifestyle, you may want a breed that loves to run and be on the go, like Boxers or Collies.   Know your lifestyle and you can select the best breed for you and your family.
