When is it Time to Take Your Bird to the Vet?

While owners of dogs and cats may know when to take their pets to the vest because there is more information available, some people who own birds may not be certain when they need to seek a veterinarian's help. If you are a bird owner and you notice some of these signs, it is time to take your bird to a local veterinarian:

  • Your bird eyes suddenly appear dull or it unexpectedly acts sluggish or lethargic.
  • Your bird remains in a puffed up state for a prolonged period of time. Sometimes, this is a sign that the bird is trying to retain body heat which is indicative of fighting off illness.
  • Your bird suddenly wants to sleep a lot more or has a decreased appetite.
  • Your bird's stools become loose or it drops weight quickly.

While these signs might not guarantee that a bird is ill, it is important to seek the expertise of a veterinarian as these signs may be indicative of illness and should be looked into as soon as possible.
