Vaccinating Your Cat

Core Vaccines

So you recently adopted or purchased a new kitten and you want to know what vaccinations are required. Although kittens do not require every possible vaccination out there, all kittens require a set of core vaccinations, which includes the vaccines for rabies, feline distemper (panleukopenia virus), feline calicivirus, and feline rhinotracheitis (herpes virus). These vaccinations are given as a series of shots while the kitten is between the ages of six weeks and 20 weeks.

Other Vaccines

Your veterinarian may recommend other vaccinations depending on your cat's age, environment, medical history, and whether or not he is an outdoor cat that comes into contact with other cats. Every one to three years, booster shots are commonly given to cats who are frequently around other cats. Other vaccines your vet may recommend include those for feline leukemia (FeLV), feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), and feline immunodeficiency virus. It's important that you do not rush out to your vet's office ask that your cat be vaccinated with all of these vaccines. These vaccines are not necessary for all cats, and can cause adverse side effects when given unnecessarily.

It's important to ensure your cat or kitten is current on its vaccinations and booster shots. If you are wondering whether or not your cat is due for a vaccination, or if you are interested in learning whether or not your cat should receive one or more of the optional vaccinations, consult your veterinarian.
