“People” Foods That Dogs Should Never Eat

When you're cooking or eating a meal, it's hard to look down at those big brown eyes and say "no," but sometimes a little scrap underneath the table can actually hurt your dog. While some foods like a slice of chicken or steak can be good for a dog, there are other "people" foods that your dog should never eat.

Some, if not most of the everyday foods inside your pantry or refrigerator are downright dangerous for your dog, and it's just not worth giving in to those puppy dog eyes if it will cost them their health.

Don't Feed Your Dog These Foods

Here, we've included a list of some foods that your dog should never eat:

  • Avocados – contain a substance called persin (a fungal toxin in avocados), which in large amounts can be toxic to dogs.
  • Alcohol – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, coma, and death.
  • Onions and garlic – can lead to poisoning and anemia.
  • Caffeine – too much can be fatal for dogs.
  • Grapes and raisins – can cause kidney failure in dogs.
  • Dairy – can cause digestive upset and diarrhea.
  • Chocolate can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, and even death.
  • Bones – bones can splinter and cause a laceration or an obstruction in a dog's digestive system.
  • Raw or cooked fat trimmed from meat – can cause pancreatitis.
  • Salt – excess quantities can cause sodium ion poisoning.
  • Sugar – too much can lead to obesity and dental problems.

Generally, most items in the kitchen and pantry are harmful to dogs. For example, baking soda, baking powder and ordinary spices such as nutmeg are highly toxic. So, it's best to stick to cooked, leaner cuts of meat or pet foods.
