Does Your Cat Sleep Too Much?

There is a reason that they call it a "cat nap." Cats are known for their lazy sleeping habits. If you are concerned that your cat sleeps too much, rest assured. The average cat sleeps 15 hours a day. Some cats can sleep up to 20 hours during a 24-hour period. Cats are more active at night, which is why they are normally napping as you go about your day. Veterinarians say that cats normally start to wake up around dusk and are most active until dawn. These nocturnal animals may get out most of their energy while you are fast asleep.

Cats are hard-wired with the physiology of a predator. This means that they are naturally designed in a way that allows them to sleep during the day and hunt at night. While cats have been domesticated, they will still have this natural while streak. Cats sleep excessively to conserve energy for their hunting efforts. Even if your cat eats Friskies from a bowl, he or she naturally sleeps to reserve energy for running, pounding, climbing and stalking.

Cats doze frequently. This means that your cat is in a light sleep and can spring into action at a moments' notice. Often your cat will doze in a way so that he or she is ready for action. When a cat is in deep sleep, he or she will experience rapid brain movement. Most of the time when a cat is asleep, he or she is dozing. Kittens and older cats tend to sleep more than an average aged cat.

Weather also affects your cats. If it is rainy or chilly outside, there is a chance that your cat will sleep more than on a sunny and springtime day. Cat behavior can vary greatly depending on your animal's breed, temperament and overall health. If you believe that your cat is sleeping too much, consider what times you are observing your cat, the weather, and how active your cat is while he or she is awake.

There is a difference between a cat that naps frequently and an animal that is lethargic. If your animal does not seem to have any energy, you may want to bring your pet in for a checkup at the vet. Lethargy could indicate that there is something terribly wrong with your kitten or cat and you will want to run any tests if you suspect that your animal is injured or ill.

Also, check to see if your cat wakes up easily or is in a very deep sleep. If your cat is often in a deep sleep, you will want to make sure you are providing your animal with the nutrients that he or she needs to have energy during the day.
